TikTok Influencers Fueling Unofficial Market for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug
An underground economy for unlicensed weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, based on recent findings.
Investigational Treatment Gaining Popularity Online
Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Viewers are urged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison images, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before redirecting customers to other platforms for purchases.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an investigational injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could assist patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Express Concerns
However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to users injecting products of unknown origin.
Several experts stated the popularity for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing price of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Position and Implementation
Marketing retatrutide on social media or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some influencers attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, advertising, and consumer laws, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or prison.
Platform Reaction and Material Removal
According to the social media company, the service has taken down violative material and prohibited associated hashtags and query recommendations. The organization said it was dedicated to maintaining the service safe and investing in enhancing compliance measures.
Online Trading Activities
Research also found groups with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with thousands of members, populated with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or administering at residence.
After minutes of joining one community, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The seller sent an guidebook and promised shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a alleged laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.
Product Details and Costs
Within these communities, posts display black plastic packages with postal service stickers, claiming to include new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens usually sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a injector should be used, sellers give conflicting answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Safety Actions
A representative for Telegram stated it actively moderated dangerous content on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Cautions
“People are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind this drug is sound, these online versions may not contain what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to current cost increases for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she explained.
Her team has already encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Position
A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a company experimental product not yet approved … may expose patients to potentially significant health risks”.
