New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become starving," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
