Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
