The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team might be designing a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, frequently in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
